Keller Elementary Students Celebrate
4-H National Youth Science Day
| October 8, 2008 was designated by Congress as 4-H National Youth Science day. WSU Colville Reservation-Ferry County Extension 4-H program, along with students from Keller Elementary School, celebrated the 1st annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (4-H NYSD) with a never-before-seen event that will get young people not only involved in, but also excited about, science. Launched in support of 4-H’s new public service campaign, “One Million New Scientists. One Million New Ideas,” WSU Colville Reservation-Ferry County Extension 4-H program’s celebration of 4-H NYSD further promotes 4-H’s long-term goal of attracting one million new youth to 4-H science, engineering, and technology programs by the year 2013. | ![]() |
In celebration of the first-ever 4-H NYSD, students from the Keller School participated in 4-H’s National Science Experiment (NSE) -- a new initiative that used science principles to teach youth across the country about the importance of water conservation. Linda McLean, 4-H Youth Development Coordinator, led the students in science experiments where they examined the properties of water-absorbing polymers. These polymners are long chains of molecules that can be used in environmental applications such as agriculture, erosion control, soil management, and environmental clean-ups. The conservation of Natural Resources is an important issue for all reservation residents. This experiment will help promote positive thinking towards protecting the environment.
“4-H National Youth Science Day was a great opportunity for Colville Reservation youth to get excited about science,” said Linda McLean, WSU Colville Reservation 4-H Youth Development Coordinator. “These initiatives helped to spark young people’s interest in science and may inspire them to explore scientific careers. The knowledge they gain will also help them make a real difference in their own communities.”
The WSU Colville Reservation-Ferry County Extension office is located in Nespelem, Washington. Programs are performed by Linda McLean, Phil Linden, and Judy Moses, and are under the direction of Dan Fagerlie, WSU Ferry County Director. The program areas that are offered through this office are 4-H Youth Development, 4-H Challenge, Family & Consumer Science and Agriculture & Natural Resources. For more information on extension programs you may contact Linda McLean at (509)634-2304 or Dan Fagerlie at (509) 775-5235.
