We offer a variety of programs and services throughout the year for both youth and adults, including shortcourses, individual workshops, field days, and site visits.

Forestry, Watershed & Fisheries Project

Curlew Lake Fisheries Day Curlew Lake Fisheries Day

WSU Ferry County Extension is providing area youth with an opportunity to gain skills and knowledge about the ecology and management of forests, watershed and fisheries through hands-on educational experiences. WSU Ferry County Extension and the Ferry County Commissioners have partnered to utilize USFS Title 3 Funds to establish the Forest, Watershed and Fisheries (FWF) Project in Ferry County. Through the Forest, Watershed and Fisheries Project, 1365 Ferry County youth participated in structured out-of-school activities last year. The FWF Project encourages youth participation and leadership, emphasizes skill building and provides educational opportunities in an environment that supports long-term, productive interactions between youth and adults. Youth involved in structured out-of-school activities are more likely to contribute to their communities.

Ferry County 4-H GPS Mapping

Mapping the Future in All Directions

To know the land is to love the land. WSU Extension forester Emily Burt provides Ferry County youth and their families the tools they need to better understand their local environment and become good stewards of it. More than 100 – and counting – county residents have learned how to use GPS to make critical land-management decisions, including mapping timber disease areas and locating critical landmarks. Today, one particular 4-H Club is putting that new knowledge to work in a different way; they are mapping a tourism route of the county that highlights its natural beauty and history and marketing it to visitors to the area. It gives them a head start on a forestry career and the local economy another economic development tool. Order poster.

Forest Stewardship Coached Planning

Ferry County Forestry Coached Planning

Participants meet for 9 weeks with other landowners and natural resource professionals to learn about a variety of stewardship projects.

Ferry County Forestry Coached Planning Curlew

Saturday field day allows for hands-on learning of key topics.

The Coached Planning shortcourse, offered in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources, is the "flagship" of the forest stewardship program. This popular, practical, hands-on shortcourse program began in southwest Washington in 1992. Since then, thousands of forest landowners across the state have learned about being stewards of their forestland and have prepared their own personalized forest stewardship plan with guidance and "coaching" from natural resource professionals.

The Coached Planning program is designed to help forest landowners develop customized management solutions to meet their own unique ownership objectives. Whether you own 5, 50, or 500 acres of forest, if you want to expand your knowledge, tools, and confidence for managing your forestland, this course is for you.

Topics included fire behavior, selecting leave trees, DNR forest practice update, skidder safety and more. For more information contact Emily Burt.
